What is GCT?
General Consumption Tax (GCT) is Jamaica's value-added tax, administered by Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ). The standard rate is 15% on most goods and services.
GCT Formulas
- Add GCT: Total = Subtotal x 1.15
- Extract GCT: GCT = Total - (Total / 1.15)
- Find Subtotal: Subtotal = Total / 1.15
Who needs to register for GCT?
Businesses with annual sales over J$10 million must register for GCT. Voluntary registration is available for smaller businesses. Registered businesses must file GCT returns monthly or bi-monthly.
GCT-Exempt Items
Some items are zero-rated or exempt from GCT, including basic food items, prescription medicines, educational materials, and certain financial services. Check with TAJ for the complete list.
